START PLANNING TODAY TO HAVE YOUR SPECIAL PROJECT RECOGNIZED

This year’s event is being planned for mid February with an announcement coming soon of the venue and date of the event and deadline to submit your project for consideration for recognition. Expect an elevated experience this year as our committee has been in looking at some interesting host sites for this years awards dinner.

Submitting your project requires a few things that can been started now, so that there is less pressure to complete your applications during the submission period.

Permission form the owner and other members of the design team are required. You can speak with them now about your plans to submit to get their buy-in.

Project photos are required. Up to 10 photos or images of site plans, drawings, renderings, as well as one one-minute video can accompany your entry. Images should be in jpeg format and the video in mp4. While professional, good quality photos that clearly show the results of your design efforts don’t hurt, there are no rules that require you to spend thousands to optain them. Just remember that post-processing to enhace the appearance is not permitted and can lead to disqualification.

Each photo or image should be accompanied by a short 25 word (max) narrative that describes the image and how it serves to meet the award criteria.

Finally, a 300 word project summary that describes the project, the design intent, desired outcome, challenges that needed to be overcome and any impact on the neighbouring community and occupants.

Our local judges will evaluate submissions using the official scoring sheets that are used for the IES Illumination Awards. More about the IA program below. When preparing your submission, download the official scoring sheets from the Illumination Awards Website. Ensure that you have provided information for the judges to evaluate how well you addressed each of the criteria. If, for example one critera involves the use of controls and you make no mention of it, the judges are required to score a zero. So, even if you don’t feel that the control methods employed are especially remarkable, state that they exist and how they support the client use of the lighting system.

We hope to see and judge one or more of your lighting projects at this year’s event. Start planning now to avoid a time crunch when we open the submission window next month. Additional instructions will be made available online at that time.

If you have any questions please reach out to us at info@iesottawa.ca and someone on the committee willl provide and answer or direct you to where you can find more information.

Highest level awards are presented in person at the IES Lighting Conference held in August.
