Those new to the industry with less than five years of experiense qualify for a special "Emerging Professional" classification and enjoy reduced membership dues until they complete their 5th year of lighting related employment.
All members receive additional perks that includes reduced pricing on publications, conferences, courses, local meetings, and events. They can attend select online webinars for free and access other pre-recorded webinars for reduced or no cost.
The best part of mebership is being affiliated with an organization known globally as the authority on all things lighting. IES is an ANSI Standards Developer Organization. Many of our members join technical committees that produce many of the guiding documents that provide guidance to those who design, calculate, manufacture, and maintain lighting equipment.

What you will need:
An account on the ies.org website. To setup a free account you will need to provide your name, a valid email address, and a password that you will use to login.
After verifying your email address, you will be asked to log into the website using youe newly created credentials. Once logged you will find a link to become a member which will allow you to begin your membership application - a 5 step process if applying as an Associate or Retired member. Student, Emerging Professional, and Member Grades require an additional step of uploading supporting documents to verify your eligibility.
Click the membership type you wish to apply for. A member grade membership has some educational and/or experience requirements. If you don't feel that you qualify, choose Associate which provides all the same benefits other than the ability to hold certain Society-level offices.
If you are new to the lighting industry (less than 5 years experience) you may qualify for this classification whcih comes with reduced annual dues. There are also Student and Retired options available.
The next step asks for your personal details including full name including any post-nominals, preferred pronouns, date of birth, Job function, level, and title. You will also need to provide your primary or mailing address, email for member correspondence, and a phone number. Optional additional contact information can be added. You will also be asked for your level of education and date of graduation, and to select your preferences related to directory listing and if you want your monthly magazing physically mailed to your address. Lastly, you will be asked to confirm aggreement with the IES Code of Conduct, policies and privicy choice.
This step asks you to look up you "organization". You can enter your company name in the search and if a match doesn't appear you can add it in the Add Detail section. If you are not affiliated with a company, University, IES Section, or Association - you may be able to proceed even if that is left blank.
Next you will be given the opportunity to select which Section you will be associated with. We hope you choose Ottawa. Choosing the correct section ensure that you appear on the Section's member roster which means they will have accurate memberhip numbers and will be able to contact you for official section matters such as local board elections or matters regarding you membership.
The final step in the application is to set communication preferences (from the IES head office) The default is set to accept all. You can choose to only select the types of communications you wish to receive.
